What happens if I can't afford to pay my strata levies?

Talk to the strata manager immediately and ask for a payment plan. Most committees will agree to instalments rather than chasing through court. Ignoring levies leads to interest charges, debt collection costs, loss of voting rights, and eventually court action.

Unpaid levies in most states attract interest of 10% p.a. and the owners corporation can usually recover legal costs as well. A debt that starts at $2,000 can balloon to $5,000 within a year if it goes to court. A payment plan is almost always better for everyone.
